Fostering connections. Promoting a sense of belonging. Community building is a crucial aspect of any organization - and figuring out the best way to manage this community is even more important.


Community management often goes beyond managing social media content and communications. While these tasks are indeed important, there is much more to it. A Community Manager (CM) builds strategies to develop and engage with your audience - be it clients, sponsors, collaborators, volunteers, or even other organizations. They plan outreach campaigns and events, optimize communication, and propose innovative platforms. They may also come up with the most creative and unexpected ways to create connections within your community.


But where does the “scientific” part come in? For this, I quote the Center for Scientific Collaboration and Community Engagement (CSCCE):

Scientific community engagement, also known as community management, refers to the human infrastructure that is necessary to support healthy and productive STEM communities. The purpose is to connect and empower members to work together towards a common goal.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) communities play a crucial role in advancing knowledge and driving innovation. Building relationships and fostering collaboration among scientists, researchers, and other stakeholders is at the heart of any successful scientific endeavor. 



A Community Manager’s strategic approach is essential in building a strong scientific community. Key elements that contribute to this effort include:


Foster a sense of belonging: A strong scientific community values diversity and inclusivity. Encourage participation from scientists of all backgrounds, disciplines, and career stages. Create a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.


Facilitate knowledge sharing: Build your community on the foundation of knowledge sharing. Promote innovation by encouraging scientists to share their expertise, insights, findings, and best practices with their peers.


Provide resources and support: Equip members with the necessary skills and resources to thrive. Invest in nurturing the next generation of scientists. By supporting community members’ growth, you invest in the community’s overall success.


Provide opportunities for networking: Organize events and initiatives to bring scientists together and foster collaboration. These events can also spark interdisciplinary collaborations, leading to groundbreaking discoveries.


Recognize and celebrate achievements: Celebrate the achievements of community members to build a sense of pride and belonging. Acknowledge their contributions to boost morale and inspire others to strive for excellence.


Seek feedback and involve members in decision-making: Building a community is a collaborative effort. Involve members in decision-making processes to make them feel valued and ensure their needs and preferences are considered. This creates a sense of ownership and empowerment within your community.
